Political appointments have always been a tricky affair for any regime. But it’s turning south rather rapidly for Najib's government. And the problem with the decisions is that they cannot be rolled back in a hurry. Najib often have no choice but to protect those they have foisted, which then takes them down the risky road of more controversial moves to avoid any embarrassment.Broadly, a significant chunk of political appointments has turned out to be a problem for the government. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has warned that those working to unseat Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as Kedah menteri besar will lead Barisan Nasional to its doom in the next general election,"I'm not saying don't change the menteri besar, but know the consequences," the former prime minister was quoted as saying in Langkawi today.The portal also quoted the country’s longest serving prime minster as saying those trying to oust Mukhriz "don't have a good reputation "They caused Barisan to lose to PAS (in 2008). So if they take over, the likelihood is that they will lose the next election," he was reported as saying. On advice he had for Mukhriz, Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying in the report that: "Anything can happen in politics. Nothing is permanent. You have friends and enemies. You can expect friends to behave like enemies, and sometimes enemies will behave like friends." Dr Mahathir said he did not meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who had spent last night in Langkawi This is Dr Mahathir’s first public comment on the matter since Kedah Umno deputy chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Hanipah called a press conference last Wednesday declaring that 14 out of 15 Kedah Umno division leaders wanted Mukhriz out and were appealing to Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to remove him.He said Mukhriz had failed to unite the party leadership and machinery, adding that the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had no strategy for Kedah Umno to face the 14th general election, due in 2018. Mukhriz became menteri besar after the 13th general election in May 2013, when Barisan Nasional wrested back the state from PAS. His ouster is now likely, following Najib’s meetings with the anti-Mukhriz camp last Friday and several Kedah BN assemblymen in Langkawi with a Star report claiming that 19 assemblymen, including two from MCA, signing a statutory declaration claiming they no longer wanted Mukhriz as menteri besar.
